"My publisher asked me to write a girl's book. I said I'd try."
Before Louisa May Alcott skyrocketed to fame for her coming of age novel about four sisters growing up in Concord Massachusetts under the shadow of the Civil War, she wrote under the pseudonym ‘AM Barnard.’
Through the personage of Barnard, she lived out her dreams of publishing gothic thrillers filled with all things scandalous and unladylike.
But that was not what the world wanted. They wanted the Little Women: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. No one thought to ask, what did Louisa want? And what is a girl’s book anyway?
“Louisa & Jo” is a one woman show about authorship, frustration and female identity, set as ever to live folk music. Join us to discover the Louisa May Alcott that could not be contained within the pages of her most famous novel.
