A Museum for Dead Instincts
“Few groups do absurdity with the wit and flair of Clout “ The Herald.
Multi-award-winning international company Clout Theatre make exciting, highly physical and provocative visual theatre. Their shows offer vastly contrasting worlds and a visceral impact on their audiences with common threads such as: dark humour, absurdist playfulness, surrealist landscapes and striking imagery.
Nominated: Total Theatre Award 2012 & 2013, Darkchat Award 2015
Winners: Audience Award Physical Fest 2012, OneStop Arts Audience Award 2013
A Museum for Dead Instincts is Clout’s brand new solo show. It places the female body at its centre, going through the trials and tribulations of lust, love, rejection, consent and all the so-called “blurry” in-betweens.
With this first work-in-progress showing, we are diving into the nitty-gritty of such themes as sexual tension, flirtation, consent & power dynamics through the lens of our research around hormones, the menstrual cycle and its effect on human behaviour.
As a female-led company, we want to challenge the narratives that shape our culture, still largely dominated by a male perspective. Women have historically been made to feel as victims of their biology whilst their bodies have been vastly under-researched. Why is it that we all seem to know about the downsides of dealing with the menstrual cycle: PMS, pain, discomfort etc., but we don’t seem to be aware of the possible positive sides of a hormonal cycle and effect on energy, creativity and sociability? We want to propose an alternative viewpoint and flip ideas of romantic love & attraction on their heads in an overambitious attempt to empower women.
We want to hear from you!
Alongside our performances we want to build a community of women & menstruating people with which we can exchange throughout the life of this project, track our cycles together, and question the narratives that shaped us. We hold regular meet-ups for menstruating people that you are more than welcome to join. And keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming workshop for fellow creatives where we will be applying the findings of this R&D. Date and place TBC.
